Free FDX Viewer — Read Final Draft Files Online

Drop a Final Draft .fdx file and read it like a screenplay in your browser. Fountain and text PDFs also work. No account.

The viewer handles .fdx first; Fountain, .txt and text-based PDFs are also accepted.

{# The contextual promotion. Hidden until the tool has produced a result, so the visitor's own task is finished before the app is mentioned. `tool.hook` is written per tool in website/tools.py — a viewer sells editing, a formatter sells automatic formatting — which is why this is not a single generic banner. #}

Read an FDX without Final Draft

Someone sends a .fdx and you just need to read it on a phone. This free viewer parses Final Draft XML in the browser and lays out scene headings, characters and dialogue as a readable screenplay. Fountain, plain text and text-based PDFs can be opened the same way; scanned image PDFs will not.

How to open an FDX here

  1. Choose the .fdx file or paste its XML.
  2. Read scenes, dialogue and transitions in the formatted preview.
  3. Download Fountain for a portable copy, or continue editing the screenplay in Zen Writer after reading.

Frequently asked questions

Is the file uploaded?

Yes. A selected file is stored in Zen Writer's tool-upload records, while parsing and viewing stay on your device.

Will dual dialogue look perfect?

Dual dialogue is flattened. Open the file in Zen Writer or Final Draft for production layout.

{# Converter success dialog. Only rendered on the converter tools, and only shown once a conversion has actually succeeded. The Zen Writer CTA is presented first, but the download stays in the dialog as a real button rather than a line of text at the bottom: the visitor's own task has to be finishable from here without dismissing anything, and the site never gates a free conversion behind a signup, an email or an install. #}
