Screenplay PDF to Fountain Converter

Extract a text-based screenplay PDF and download clean, editable Fountain in your browser.

Drop a PDF. Text extraction and conversion happen on your device, and the original upload is stored. Scanned image PDFs need OCR first.

{# The contextual promotion. Hidden until the tool has produced a result, so the visitor's own task is finished before the app is mentioned. `tool.hook` is written per tool in website/tools.py — a viewer sells editing, a formatter sells automatic formatting — which is why this is not a single generic banner. #}

PDF to Fountain, in the browser

Many screenplay PDFs contain a selectable text layer. This tool reads that layer, uses line position to recover scene headings, character cues, dialogue, parentheticals, and action, then downloads a plain-text .fountain file. It does not OCR photographs of pages.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PDF empty?

The file is probably scanned images or uses compressed custom fonts without extractable text. Paste the text from Preview/Adobe instead, or use the formatter tool.

Will page numbers and MORE/CONT’D come through?

The converter removes common page numbers, MORE, and CONTINUED markers while rebuilding the screenplay.

Need a Final Draft file instead?

Use the dedicated PDF to FDX converter for a downloadable Final Draft XML file.

{# Converter success dialog. Only rendered on the converter tools, and only shown once a conversion has actually succeeded. The Zen Writer CTA is presented first, but the download stays in the dialog as a real button rather than a line of text at the bottom: the visitor's own task has to be finishable from here without dismissing anything, and the site never gates a free conversion behind a signup, an email or an install. #}
