Free Screenplay Formatter (Plain Text to Fountain)

Paste a messy draft from Notes or Docs. Get industry sluglines, character cues, and dialogue — then download Fountain, FDX, or PDF.

{# The contextual promotion. Hidden until the tool has produced a result, so the visitor's own task is finished before the app is mentioned. `tool.hook` is written per tool in website/tools.py — a viewer sells editing, a formatter sells automatic formatting — which is why this is not a single generic banner. #}

Turn a messy draft into a screenplay

Writers dump scenes into Notes, email, or Google Docs, then need INT./EXT., character cues, and dialogue spacing. This formatter looks for sluglines, NAME: dialogue novel lines, and ALL-CAPS speakers, then rebuilds Fountain you can open in Final Draft or Zen Writer.

Frequently asked questions

Does it replace a dedicated screenwriting app?

No. It is a first pass. Keep writing with live formatting in Zen Writer so you are not cleaning sluglines after every scene.

What if my draft is already Fountain?

If it already has INT./EXT. headings, the parser treats it as Fountain and you can still export FDX or PDF.

{# Converter success dialog. Only rendered on the converter tools, and only shown once a conversion has actually succeeded. The Zen Writer CTA is presented first, but the download stays in the dialog as a real button rather than a line of text at the bottom: the visitor's own task has to be finishable from here without dismissing anything, and the site never gates a free conversion behind a signup, an email or an install. #}
