Fountain to FDX & PDF Converter

Paste Fountain or drop a .fountain file. Download Final Draft XML or a printable PDF — in the browser.

Parsing runs in your browser. A file selected above is also stored in Zen Writer's tool-upload records.

{# The contextual promotion. Hidden until the tool has produced a result, so the visitor's own task is finished before the app is mentioned. `tool.hook` is written per tool in website/tools.py — a viewer sells editing, a formatter sells automatic formatting — which is why this is not a single generic banner. #}

Fountain to Final Draft, without an account

Fountain is the plain-text standard many writers keep in git, Notes, or email. Final Draft wants .fdx. This converter maps scene headings, character cues, dialogue, parentheticals, and transitions into FDX XML you can open in Final Draft — or a simple Courier PDF for a read.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a full Fountain spec parser?

It covers everyday production markup (INT/EXT, character/dialogue, transitions, title keys). Dual dialogue and some lyric/forced elements are simplified.

Will Final Draft open the file?

The export is Final Draft XML (DocumentType=Script). Open via File → Open and choose the .fdx.

{# Converter success dialog. Only rendered on the converter tools, and only shown once a conversion has actually succeeded. The Zen Writer CTA is presented first, but the download stays in the dialog as a real button rather than a line of text at the bottom: the visitor's own task has to be finishable from here without dismissing anything, and the site never gates a free conversion behind a signup, an email or an install. #}
