How to Write a Screenplay on Your Phone (iPhone and Android)

Can you write a screenplay on your phone? Yes, and here is why it works now

Ten years ago writing a script on a phone meant typing into a notes app and reformatting everything later. Three things changed.

• Auto-formatting. A proper screenwriting app knows that a line starting with INT. is a scene heading, that the line after a character cue is dialogue, and that Enter after dialogue goes to the next cue. You type words; the app handles Courier, margins and element positions. The page you export is the same page a desktop app would produce.

A realistic mobile screenwriting workflow

Writers who finish scripts on phones do not sit down to write a feature on a phone. They use the phone for the parts of the job that happen in small pieces, all day, and reserve the desk for the parts that need two hours and a wide view.

1. Capture scenes when they arrive. The idea comes in a queue or a car park. Open the app, type a slugline and the two lines of dialogue you can hear, close the app. Thirty seconds. Over a month this is where half the script comes from.
2. Dictate the rough version. The phone's keyboard microphone works in any text field. Dictate action and dialogue in a first-draft voice, then fix the formatting in a minute by tapping element types. Dictation is fast for dialogue in particular, because you hear the rhythm as you speak it.
3. Outline in scene cards. A scene navigator that lists every heading with a one-line synopsis is an index-card board that fits in a hand. 4. Write on the commute. One scene per journey is a realistic target: two to three pages, twenty to forty minutes. Five journeys a week is a feature in ten to twelve weeks.
5. Rewrite on a Mac or iPad. Open the same file on the bigger screen for structural passes, reading the whole thing through, and cutting. Then take the next scene back to the phone.

Objections, answered

"The screen is too small to see the script." It is too small to see a page, which is why you do not rewrite on it. It is large enough to see the scene you are writing, which is all a first draft needs. Structural reads happen on the Mac or iPad from the same file.

"Typing on glass is slow." Slower than a keyboard, yes, and faster than not writing. A scene a commute is a real pace. Dictation closes most of the gap for dialogue. And a phone with a folding keyboard or a tablet with a case keyboard is a laptop that fits in a coat.

"The formatting will be wrong." Only if the app is a notes app. A screenwriting app produces the same Courier, the same margins and the same element positions as desktop software, and the export is a standard PDF or FDX. "Real writers use Final Draft." Real writers deliver a properly formatted script. Nobody who reads it can tell what it was typed on. If a collaborator needs an FDX, export one.

"Phones are for distraction." True, and the fix is the same as on a laptop: a full-screen editor, notifications off for twenty minutes, and a single scene as the goal.

Step by step: writing a screenplay on iPhone with Zen Writer

1. Install. Get Zen Writer for iPhone from the App Store. It is free and there is no account to create.

6. Change an element if the guess is wrong. Tap the element label above the keyboard to cycle a line between heading, action, cue, dialogue, parenthetical and transition.
7. Dictate when your hands are busy. Tap the microphone on the keyboard, speak the scene, then fix elements with the label tap.
8. Navigate by scene. Open the scene navigator to jump between headings, add a synopsis to each, and drag scenes into a new order.
9. Check the count. Script statistics show pages, estimated runtime and the scene breakdown at any point.
10. Move to the bigger screen. Export Fountain or FDX and open it in Zen Writer for iPad or on the Mac for the rewrite. Bring it back the same way.

Step by step: writing a screenplay on Android with Zen Writer
